We’re living in a state of relentless motion.

The economy sends mixed signals by the week. The old playbooks? Already outdated. What once guaranteed success now stumbles. Trust flickers. Strategies pivot mid-air. The only constant? Change itself.

In this environment, leadership isn’t about having the answers.

It’s about how we show up: calm, honest, and connected.

Here’s a simple framework that can help leaders navigate from wherever they sit:

Lead Out. Lead Up. Lead In.

Each direction matters. Each requires intention.

🔹 Lead Out – Showing Up for Your Teams

  • Hold space, even when you don’t have news. You don’t need all the answers. Just showing up and saying: “I know there’s a lot of uncertainty right now. I don’t have everything figured out—but I’m here, I’ll keep you updated, and we’ll navigate this together,” is leadership.
  • Recognize effort in the fog. When outcomes are unclear, how people show up matters most—helping each other, trying new things, staying in it together. That builds momentum. And belonging.
  • Ask open questions. “What are you seeing? What’s getting harder? What might we be missing?” You don’t need to solve everything in the moment—just listen. Then act where you can.

🔹 Lead Up – Supporting Your Stakeholders

  • Bring clarity from the front lines. Share what’s really happening—not just what’s going well. Your insight helps guide better decisions.
  • Offer solutions, not just problems. Even if you’re unsure, try: “Here’s what we’re seeing, and here are two ways we might respond.”
  • Be the bridge. Help execs connect big-picture strategy with the lived reality your people are facing.

🔹 Lead In – Taking Care of You

  • Protect small boundaries. One “no” a week can buy you the space to say “yes” to what matters most.
  • Talk to other leaders. You’re not alone. Peer conversations are where uncertainty becomes clarity—and courage.
  • Reconnect to purpose. A 5-minute pause to ask yourself, “Why do I lead?” can be more grounding than any strategy doc.

In times of volatility, people don’t need certainty—they need clarity, connection, and calm.

This moment is not asking for perfection. It’s asking for presence. For empathy. And for the courage to walk through the unknown—together.

Keep showing up. Keep listening. Keep leading forward.

What’s one way you’re supporting your team—or yourself—right now?
